What Is the Abortion Pill?

If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be hearing about the abortion pill and wondering what it actually involves. It is a common option discussed early in pregnancy, but the name can make it sound simpler than it is. Understanding how it works and what to expect can help you make a more informed decision.

At Anchor of Hope, we provide a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can ask questions and learn more about your options at your own pace.

A Two-Step Process

The abortion pill, also known as a chemical abortion, is not a single pill. It involves two different drugs taken in sequence.

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone essential for a pregnancy to continue developing. Without it, the pregnancy can no longer progress.

The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

This two-step process is FDA-approved for use through 10 weeks of gestation.

What You Could Experience

Every woman’s experience is different, but abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding are expected parts of the process.

Women are often told to expect pain similar to menstrual cramps, but a 2023 study found that nearly half of women experienced more pain than anticipated. One participant noted the pain was comparable to labor contractions, saying she had no indication it could be that painful based on the information she was given.

It’s important to know that the experience could be more painful than it’s represented. However, each experience varies. Additional side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, or fatigue.

Risks and Important Considerations

While many women complete a chemical abortion without complications, there are risks to be aware of. These can include heavy or prolonged bleeding, infection, or an incomplete abortion, any of which may require follow-up medical care.

It is also essential to know that the abortion pill is not effective if the pregnancy is located outside the uterus. Known as an ectopic pregnancy, this condition cannot be treated with the abortion pill and requires immediate medical attention. This is one of the key reasons a medical evaluation, including a limited ultrasound, is strongly recommended before making any decisions.
