Before An Abortion

What things should I know before making an abortion decision?

  • I have had an ultrasound to confirm my pregnancy and ensure that it is progressing normally.
  • I have carefully researched all abortion procedures.
  • I have carefully researched all the potential physical complications that could arise due to an abortion.
  • I have carefully researched all the potential emotional complications that could arise due to an abortion.
  • The abortion clinic has shown me, in writing, that they will care for me if I experience any side effects or complications.
  • The abortion doctor has hospital privileges at a local hospital and I have been given documentation to prove this.
  • I have carefully researched the abortion clinic and I am sure that they have not had any lawsuits filed against them.
  • I have carefully researched the abortion clinic and I am 100% certain that no women have been hospitalized, injured, or suffered serious complications due to an abortion performed at this clinic.
  • I have been tested for STDs.
  • I have carefully researched fetal development.


Is abortion the right choice for me?
If you cannot answer yes to each of these, take some time and make sure that you have done everything necessary to prepare for this procedure.

What if I get to my abortion appointment and change my mind?
If you arrive at the clinic and you are not comfortable with what is going on, you are free to leave. At no point can the clinic detain you.
If you are frightened and feel that you cannot leave, call the police immediately.

What can I do if someone is forcing me to have an abortion?
If someone is forcing you to have an abortion and you are in immediate danger please call 911. If someone is pressuring you or threatening you, call 911 and contact The Justice Foundation at 210-614-7157.

At Home Abortion​

What are abortion pills?
Abortion pills can be marketed as Plan C, missed period pills, Ru-486, Cytotec, MTP Kits, and beyond.

What is a self-managed abortion?
A self-managed abortion occurs when someone gets abortion pills without a medical provider.

Are there risks to at home abortion?
At-home abortion is not without risk. Without medical oversight from a licensed medical provider, you may be putting your health at risk. Complications and risks can include:

  • Ectopic Pregnancy: without an ultrasound, there is no way to rule out ectopic pregnancy. (When a pregnancy is growing outside your uterus). Ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening and is not treated or resolved by taking abortion pills. Learn More.
  • Pregnancy Length: Without medical oversight from a licensed medical provider, and without an ultrasound-you do not have a correct gestational date. Finding out how far in your pregnancy you are is vital to your health as the FDA only has approved abortion pills up to the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Learn more.
  • Pill Ingredients: Unregulated pills sometimes used for at home or self managed abortions are not tested by the FDA. There is no way to know what ingredients the pills without FDA regulations contain and the additional risks they may pose. Learn more.

Chemical Abortion

What is a chemical abortion?
A chemical abortion, also known as the abortion pill or medical abortion, is a pregnancy termination process that involves taking two different drugs:  Mifepristone and Misoprostol.  The FDA has approved its use for up to the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.  Learn more

Surgical Abortion

What are surgical abortions called?
Surgical abortions are also called in-clinic abortions.

What kinds of surgical abortions are there?
There are 2 types of surgical abortion:

  • Aspiration abortion: It is performed on women up to 14 weeks after their last period.
    • Medicine given: pain medicine, which can include a numbing medication that is injected into the cervix.
    • Average clinic visit: 3-4 hours
    • Process: “Your doctor will first insert a speculum and examine your uterus. Your cervix will be stretched and opened with dilators either before or during the procedure. Your doctor will insert a tube through the cervix into the uterus, which is attached to a suction device. This will empty the uterus. Many women will feel mild to moderate cramping during this portion of the procedure. The cramping typically decreases after the tube is removed from the uterus.”

  • Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) Abortion: It is typically performed at 14 or 16 weeks or after.
    • Medicine given: pain medicine
    • Average clinic visit: 3-4 hours
    • Process: “This procedure starts the same way as an aspiration abortion, with the doctor applying pain medication, checking your uterus, and dilating your cervix. Like the aspiration abortion, the doctor inserts a tube attached to a suction machine to the uterus through the cervix and, combined with the other medical tools, it will gently empty the uterus. After the tube has been removed, your doctor will use a small, metal loop-shaped tool called a curette to remove any remaining tissue that is lining the uterus. This will ensure that the uterus is completely empty.”
