What Questions Should You Ask Before Choosing Abortion, Adoption, or Parenting?

Finding out you are pregnant when you were not expecting it can make everything feel urgent.

You may feel like you need to make a decision immediately. Friends have opinions. Family members may be weighing in. The internet has more information than you know what to do with.

Before you decide anything, give yourself permission to ask questions in person with a licensed medical professional at no cost.

A pregnancy decision is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. The more informed you are, the more confident you can feel about whatever comes next.

Here are some of the most important questions to ask yourself before choosing abortion, adoption, or parenting.

1. Have I Confirmed My Pregnancy?

A home pregnancy test is an important first step, but it does not tell you everything.

Before making any pregnancy decision, it is important to confirm:

  • The pregnancy is developing inside the uterus

  • How far along are you

  • Whether the pregnancy is still viable

An ultrasound provides information that a home pregnancy test cannot. Home pregnancy tests measure hCG levels at a single point in time, confirming whether a pregnancy is likely. An ultrasound can identify if your pregnancy is growing in your uterus, determine gestational age, and confirm whether the pregnancy is progressing. This information can affect your available options and your medical care.

2. Do I Understand All Three Options?

Many women begin researching one option without fully understanding the others.

Take time to learn about:

  • What abortion involves, including the different methods based on gestational age

  • What modern adoption looks like, including open, semi-open, and closed adoption

  • What parenting resources may be available if you choose to raise your child

You do not have to know your answer today. Understanding all of your options helps you make a decision based on facts rather than assumptions.

3. Am I Making This Decision Because I Want To?

Outside opinions can feel incredibly powerful, especially when they come from people you love. It’s okay to consider their perspective, but don’t lose sight of your own. Your decision is yours to make.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I being pressured by my partner?

  • Am I afraid of disappointing my family?

  • Am I making this decision because of fear?

  • If no one else’s opinion existed, what would I want to explore?

Your circumstances matter, and so do the people in your life. But this decision deserves thoughtful consideration rather than pressure from someone else. The final decision belongs to you and you alone.

4. What Support Is Actually Available to Me?

Many people assume they have to figure everything out alone.

That is often not true, and often there are many free community resources available, and your support system may be larger than you realize.

Depending on your situation, support may include:

  • Parenting education

  • Baby supplies

  • Community referrals

  • Adoption planning

  • Pregnancy education

  • Medical referrals

  • Emotional support

You may be eligible for programs that can help with healthcare, food, and other pregnancy-related expenses. Depending on your situation, resources such as BadgerCare, WIC, SNAP, and other local assistance programs may be available to you. Our team can help you understand your options and connect you with resources.

Sometimes knowing what help exists changes how you view your options.

5. What Questions Do I Still Have?

You do not need to become an expert overnight.

Instead, make a list.

Ask yourself:

  • What happens next if I choose abortion?

  • What does the adoption process actually look like?

  • What financial resources exist if I decide to parent?

  • What medical care will I need during pregnancy?

  • How will I pay for prenatal care if I don’t have insurance?

  • What am I still unsure about?

Writing your questions down often helps organize the emotions that come with an unexpected pregnancy.

6. Have I Given Myself Time to Think?

Feeling overwhelmed is normal.

Making an informed decision does not usually happen in a single afternoon.

Unless your healthcare provider has told you that immediate medical care is needed, you typically have time to gather accurate information and understand your options before making a decision.

You deserve facts, not panic.
