You just took the test. And now your heart is racing.
Maybe you feel scared. Maybe numb. Maybe you are crying and you are not even sure why. Whatever is happening inside you right now, one thing is true: you are not alone, and what you are feeling makes complete sense.
A positive pregnancy test can feel like the ground just shifted under your feet. That kind of news does not come with a manual. It is okay if you do not know what to do next.
First: Give Yourself a Minute
You do not have to have it all figured out today.
Sit somewhere quiet. Take a few slow, deep breaths. You do not need to make any decisions in the next hour, or even the next few days. The most important thing right now is just to slow down and let yourself breathe.
Research shows that slow, intentional breathing is one of the most effective ways to calm anxiety. Try breathing in for four counts, then out for six. Do this a few times. It genuinely helps.
It Is Normal to Feel Scared
More than one in three pregnant women experience significant anxiety during pregnancy. That number is even higher when the pregnancy was unexpected.
Fear does not mean you are weak. It means you are human, and you are facing something big.
You might be worried about money, about school or work, about what people will think, about a relationship, or about your future. Those are real concerns, and they deserve real answers, not judgment.
Simple Ways to Cope In the Moment
Talk to someone you trust. You may seek out a friend, a family member, or anyone who will listen without judging. Keeping it all inside makes anxiety worse. You do not have to have answers before you reach out.
Write it down. If you are not ready to talk, grab a journal or even your phone notes. Getting your thoughts out of your head and onto a page can take some of the pressure off.
Stay off scary forums. Reading worst-case stories online at 2 a.m. will not help you. It will make things harder. Step away from the scroll.
Take it one day at a time. You do not need to solve everything at once. Is there one small, manageable step you can take today? Just focus on that.
